Applying for a B1/B2 (tourism) visa for the first time can be a long process. According to the State Department, in some states in Mexico, obtaining an appointment to interview with a consular officer can take up to a year or more.

To obtain a visa, you must complete and submit form DS-160 with a recent photo, and present it on the day of the interview. At the interview, you will be asked questions to confirm that you do not plan to stay in the United States and that you can cover your travel expenses.

Documents required for the interview include a valid passport, the completed DS-160 form, receipt of application fee payment, and a recent color photograph.
