New U.S. Green Card Requirements Effective December 2024

 

The United States has introduced new criteria for applying for permanent residency, commonly known as a green card, which certain eligible individuals must meet. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced additional requirements for Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status.

 

Changes Took Effect on December 2, 2024

 

Starting Monday, December 2, 2024, the federal agency warns that applications not meeting the new requirements may be denied. It is crucial for applicants to be aware of these changes to ensure a successful petition.

 

Medical Examination and Vaccinations Now Mandatory with Form I-485

 

From the specified date, those required by USCIS to submit Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, or a partial Form I-693 (such as the Vaccination Record), must include it with Form I-485. Failure to do so may result in rejection. USCIS emphasizes that applicants generally must undergo an immigration medical examination, receive all required vaccinations, and submit a properly completed and signed Form I-693 by a civil surgeon.

 

Form Updates to Prevent Rejections

 

Additionally, since November, USCIS only accepts applications using the latest editions of Forms I-485, I-765, and I-539, updated as of August 28, 2024. Any older form editions submitted to USCIS will be rejected, making it essential to use the most current versions.

 

Pathway to U.S. Citizenship

 

Obtaining a green card allows the immigrant to apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and other federal laws that provide various pathways to change immigration status to lawful permanent resident.
