President Joe Biden is set to announce a new immigration program that will provide a path to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of immigrants residing in the United States illegally. This initiative will mainly benefit undocumented spouses of US citizens, who will be able to apply for permanent residence (green card) and obtain work permits for three years. The announcement will be made at the White House with the presence of members of Congress and immigration advocates.

The program is designed for those immigrants who have lived in the United States continuously for at least 10 years and are legally married to US citizens before June 17. Additionally, the plan will expedite access to work visas for some Dreamers, those who were brought to the country as children. Dreamers under 21 years of age will be able to obtain work visas if they meet certain educational and work requirements.

It is estimated that this program could benefit about 500,000 people, with an additional 50,000 to 100,000 Dreamers. This action follows recent executive actions by Biden to strengthen border security and address challenges to the immigration system. These measures include a proclamation to suspend the entry of noncitizens who illegally cross the southern border of the United States, with the goal of easing the burden on Border Patrol agents and allowing for faster removal of those without legal basis for stay in the country
