President Joe Biden is expected to announce new executive action next week to protect certain undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for years from deportation.
An Innovative Program
The Biden Administration plans one of the largest recent immigration aid programs, which would offer work permits and protection from deportation to undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens, as long as they have resided in the country for at least 10 years. This initiative, called "Parole in Place", would also allow some beneficiaries to access permanent legal status and US citizenship, eliminating legal barriers that make it difficult to obtain green cards.
Additional Changes
Additionally, a plan is being developed to streamline the process of obtaining temporary visas, such as H-1Bs for highly skilled workers, especially for DREAMers and other undocumented immigrants. The measures could be announced next week, coinciding with the 12th anniversary of the DACA program, which protects about 530,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.
Impact and Scope
The "Parole in Place" program would be the largest immigration policy since DACA, and would benefit approximately 1.1 million undocumented immigrants married to US citizens who meet residency requirements and other rules. This action also comes shortly after an executive order temporarily restricting the entry of asylum seekers.
Expectations and Support
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus and immigrant advocacy groups have pushed for these protections for months, seeking work permits and deportation protection for undocumented people married to U.S. citizens. The move could also give Biden a political boost among Latino voters.
Existing Programs
Currently, USCIS administers a limited "Parole in Place" program for military family members, allowing some undocumented immigrants to obtain green cards without leaving the country.
In total, it is estimated that there are approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
