The United States offers citizens of certain countries the possibility of visa-free entry, thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This initiative allows eligible travelers to enter the U.S. for tourism, business or transit for a limited time. In this article, I will tell you the essential requirement to travel without a visa and the steps you must follow to take advantage of this benefit.

 

What is the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?

 

The Visa Waiver Program is an agreement that the United States has with several countries, which allows its citizens to enter the country without a visa for up to 90 days. However, in order to travel under this program, visitors must meet a specific requirement: apply for and obtain a travel authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

 

The Key Requirement: ESTA Authorization

 

The ESTA authorization is an electronic form that travelers must complete before flying to the United States. This process is quick and is done online, and its purpose is to verify that the traveler meets the Visa Waiver Program criteria. Here's how to obtain it:

 

1. Complete the Online Form

 

The ESTA form is available on the official U.S. Department of Homeland Security website. Travelers must provide personal information, passport details, and answer security questions.

 

2. Pay the Fee

 

To complete the application, a fee is required. Once approved, ESTA is valid for two years, allowing multiple entries to the U.S. during that time, provided each stay does not exceed 90 days.

 

Benefits of the Visa Waiver Program

 

The Visa Waiver Program simplifies entry for eligible travelers, eliminating the visa application process. However, it is important to remember that it is only available for short stays and does not permit working or studying in the United States.

 

What if You Don’t Qualify for the VWP?

 

If a traveler does not qualify for the VWP or their country is not part of the program, they must apply for a non-immigrant visa (B1/B2) to enter the United States.
