Could Donald Trump Revoke Naturalized Citizenship?

During his campaign, Donald Trump proposed the possibility of revoking citizenship for individuals born in the United States to undocumented parents. This statement has raised concerns among naturalized citizens about the potential loss of their nationality. Telemundo 48 consulted immigration expert Andrew Newcombs to clarify these concerns.

Is Denaturalization Possible?

 Immigration lawyer Andrew Newcombs explained that denaturalization, although legal, is rare and applies under specific circumstances. “It is primarily reserved for cases where citizenship has been fraudulently obtained, for example, under a false name or with a prior deportation order,” Newcombs noted.

Reasons for Citizenship Revocation:

• Convictions for terrorism or treason.
• Membership in terrorist organizations.
• Refusal to serve in the U.S. military.
• Enlistment in foreign military forces.

Despite Trump's claims about changing the 14th Amendment to eliminate birthright citizenship, Newcombs emphasized that any attempt to amend the Constitution would require congressional action and would be subject to judicial review.

Historical Reminder: In 2019, Trump tried to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census, which was blocked by the Supreme Court.
