Canada-Mexico Relations
Canada and Mexico have maintained a strong and positive diplomatic relationship for the past 80 years. Since February 29, 2024, Canadian authorities require Mexican citizens to obtain a tourist visa to enter Canada. This measure addresses the rise in asylum applications from Mexican citizens, many of which were denied, withdrawn, or abandoned. The aim is to maintain the mobility of Mexican citizens while ensuring proper immigration system management in Canada.
Visa Validity and Entries
Most approved visas for Mexicans are multiple-entry visas, allowing unlimited visits to Canada for up to 10 years or until the passport expires. This visa ensures legal and orderly entry into the country.
Context of Asylum Applications
In 2023, Mexican citizens' asylum applications accounted for 17% of all applications in Canada. Since the visa requirement was lifted in 2016, applications rose from 260 in 2016 to 23,995 in 2023, leading to the reinstatement of the tourist visa requirement for Mexicans.
