Are you a permanent resident of the United States and wish to become a U.S. citizen? If that is your desire, it is essential that you meet certain requirements. The naturalization process involves several important steps and one of the most essential is the declaration of intent before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). But before you get to that point, there are two key conditions you must meet.

 

The first requirement is to have at least five years as a lawful permanent resident. During this time, you must not have left the U.S. for more than six months in a single trip, and you must have been physically present in the country for at least 30 months. This ensures that you have had a continuous and meaningful stay in the U.S. territory.

 

The second requirement applies to those who have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least three years. In this case, in addition to meeting the stay criteria, you must show that you have lived with your spouse during that time. Also, you must not have left the U.S. for more than six months and you need to have been present for at least 18 months within the country.

 

Once you have verified that you meet these requirements, the next step is to complete Form N-400, the official application for naturalization. This form is one of the most important in the process, as you will provide all the information required by USCIS to proceed with your case. You will also need to present your documentation to an immigration officer and take the English and civics exams.

 

After completing all of these steps, you will be called to an oath of allegiance ceremony, where you will officially become a U.S. citizen. This is one of the last stages of the process, but also one of the most significant, as it marks the end of your path to naturalization.
