After remaining unchanged for eight years, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated the fees for naturalization, which will be applied throughout the next year. This adjustment in costs reflects a modernization of the agency's operations, as well as a response to the increasing volume of work it manages.

 

Starting April 1, 2025, the fee to process the N-400 naturalization form will be $760 for paper submissions. However, USCIS aims to encourage the use of digital mediums by offering a reduced rate of $710 for those who opt for the online process. Additionally, for those individuals whose incomes do not exceed 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, the fee is reduced to $380, provided they submit the necessary documentation to verify their economic situation.

 

In an effort to ensure that fees do not represent an insurmountable obstacle for applicants, USCIS has implemented fee waivers for U.S. military service members and for other applicants facing serious financial difficulties. The latter can apply for a complete fee waiver using the Form I-912, Request for Fee Waiver.

 

The shift towards digitization not only aims to reduce costs for applicants but also to streamline the administrative process and enhance the operational efficiency of the agency. This strategy includes a $50 discount on fees for those who process their applications online.

 

Detailed Process for Applying for Citizenship through USCIS’s Digital Platform:

 

  • Create an account on the official USCIS portal (uscis.gov) and verify your identity with two-step authentication.
  • Access the N-400 form from your account, review the requirements, and make sure you meet them before proceeding.
  • Complete the digital form, providing details such as your residential and employment history, and your travels abroad over the past five years.
  • Upload the necessary documents to support your application, pay the reduced fee if applicable, and submit your application online.
  • Through your account, you can monitor the status of your case and receive notifications about important updates, including appointments for biometric data collection and the naturalization interview.
