ICE Expands Repatriation Flights

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced new measures to increase the capacity for repatriation flights and detention as part of the joint "Securing the Border" program by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. ICE will optimize contracts with airlines to maximize the number of weekly repatriation flights.

Closure of Facilities and Resource Redistribution

ICE will close the South Texas Family Residential Center and reallocate funds to increase bed capacity in the system, adding approximately 1,600 additional beds. This will be implemented to enhance operational capacity and support immigration control needs.

Increase in Deportations

During 2023, ICE averaged 29 deportation flights per week. With the new measure, this number is expected to increase in the coming weeks, quickly imposing consequences on migrants who illegally cross the southern border. In May 2024, there were 3,800 daily crossings and 118,000 detentions, although these figures are lower than in December 2023, when interceptions exceeded 250,000.

Agreement with Mexico

The Biden administration maintains an agreement with Mexico to accept up to 30,000 citizens per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela after being denied entry to the United States. This agreement will remain in effect according to the presidential order of June 4.

Political Context and Elections

Irregular immigration is a central issue in the political controversy in the United States ahead of the November elections. The presidential order and new deportation measures come five months before the elections, where Biden and former President Donald Trump could face each other.

Collaboration with Cuba

Recently, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío expressed Cuba's willingness to accept more deportation flights of migrants from the United States, highlighting the Cuban regime's openness to this cooperation.

These measures reflect the Biden administration's efforts to control illegal immigration and optimize control and detention resources in a dynamic and changing migration landscape.
