Living legally in the United States is an achievable goal through several options, each designed for different situations and needs. Knowing these options is essential for those seeking to immigrate and settle in this country.

That is why below, I will share and explain the six main ways to legally settle in the country:

  • 1. Work Visas (H-1B, L-1, etc.): These visas allow foreign professionals to work in the U.S. for a specified period of time, with the possibility of renewing their stay and eventually applying for permanent residency.

  • 2. Family Reunification: U.S. citizens and permanent residents may sponsor their immediate family members for legal residency. This process, although time-consuming, offers a safe and reliable pathway to immigration.

  • 3. Diversity Visa Lottery: This program awards a limited number of visas each year to people from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S. Those who win in this program may apply for residency.

  • 4. Foreign Investment (EB-5 Visa): Foreign investors who meet certain financial requirements may obtain permanent residency by investing in the U.S. economy and creating jobs.

  • 5. Political Asylum: Those fleeing persecution in their home countries may apply for asylum in the U.S. If granted, applicants may obtain permanent residency and eventually citizenship.

  • 6. Student Visas (F-1): These visas allow international students to live temporarily in the U.S. while completing their studies. Subsequently, they can opt for programs that allow them to work and obtain residency.

Each of these options has specific requirements and processes that must be followed precisely. Choosing the right option depends on the applicant's individual circumstances and long-term goals.
