One of the biggest sources of frustration for immigrants seeking to regularize their status in the United States is the delay in the delivery of the green card, commonly known as the Green Card. This process, overseen by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), can be quite lengthy and often creates uncertainty for those who have met all the requirements but are still waiting for a final answer.

The USCIS allows applicants to follow the status of their cases through its online platform, where they can check the progress of the process. However, the waiting time varies depending on each specific situation. The agency has determined three possible deadlines related to the payment of the immigrant visa fee, which may influence the time it takes for the Green Card to arrive.

In the first scenario, if the applicant paid the immigrant visa fee prior to entering the United States on his or her visa, the process may take up to 90 days from entry into the country. In the second scenario, if the fee payment was made after entry, the time period will begin to run from the date of payment, also with a maximum of 90 days. In a third scenario, if the applicant has not yet paid the fee, the Green Card cannot be processed until the fee is paid online.

However, there are situations where the process may extend beyond these estimated time frames. According to USCIS, those cases that exceed 93% of the typical processing time, or 130% of the case adjudication cycle, may require additional action. In these cases, the applicant should check the receipt date on their notice to obtain an estimate of when they can contact the authorities to resolve their situation.

In addition, USCIS cautions that various reasons may cause delays in Green Card processing, such as workload, the time it takes for an applicant to respond to requests for additional information, changes in agency operations, or factors particular to each case. It is critical to be alert to any additional notifications to avoid unnecessary delays.
