If you are about to take the U.S. citizenship exam, proper preparation is essential to minimize stress and increase your chances of success. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides helpful resources, including simulations and tips on social media, to help candidates become familiar with the process.

During the interview, you will be asked up to 10 questions in English about civics, of which you need to answer six correctly to pass. Additionally, you will need to pass a reading and writing test in English.

Although the fear of failing is common, USCIS offers a second chance to retake the exam between 60 and 90 days after the first failed attempt. Not passing on two occasions can result in the denial of your naturalization application.

Applicants aged 50 or older with more than 20 years as permanent residents, or aged 55 or older with more than 15 years of residency, may be exempt from the English test. Those with disabilities that make learning English difficult can request an exemption using Form N-648, a medical certification signed by an authorized healthcare professional.

Taking advantage of the resources and preparing adequately will allow you to face this important step toward U.S. citizenship with confidence.
